The explosion at the head of the column caught him by surprise. Tynan’s first instinct was to dive for cover as the small arms opened fire, but he saw the men of the column spinning, their weapons at their hips, shooting into the trees. The noise grew until it was a continuous roar, the men charging into the trees, some of them screaming at the tops of their voices.

Tynan hesitated and then followed the strikers. He leaped over a small bush and came face to face with an NVA soldier. The man swung the barrel of his weapon up, at Tynan. He blocked it with the butt of his own, twisting it, forcing it back, away from him. The enemy went with the motion as Tynan shoved him. Before the man could recover, Tynan hit him in the back with his rifle butt, and as the enemy collapsed to the ground, Tynan shot him once in the chest.

Tynan leaped over the trunk of a fallen tree and spun to the right. He saw two men in the dark green of the NVA and opened fire on them. Both went down in tumbling, bleeding heaps without firing a shot at him. Tynan moved to the left and dropped to one knee, his back to a thick palm.

He saw two strikers leap at a single VC dressed in black pajamas. The enemy soldier fired his weapon but hit neither of the strikers. The VC then tossed his rifle away and leaped to his feet. He threw his arms in the air, shouting something in a high, tight voice. But he kept backing away, finally turning to flee. Both strikers opened fire at the same instant. Tynan saw the trees and bushes around the man shredded by the bullets, but he kept running. Finally he was hit once. He staggered two steps, reached out, grabbed at a tree, and then fell. The strikers riddled him then.

All around the firing was tapering off. There was a single crash, a muffled boom from a Chicom grenade. Tynan looked toward the sound and saw a tiny cloud of dirt expanding and climbing toward the canopy, barely visible in the light mist and half light of the jungle.

He got to his feet, moved to the right, but found only a single body of a dead NVA soldier. There were three bullet holes in his back. Two were small, neat holes with a little blood around them. The other was fist-sized and exposed bone and lung. Near the man’s hand was a pistol. Tynan picked it up and slipped it into his pocket.

“Cease fire! Cease fire!” called a voice.

There were a few more scattered shots. Tynan moved back toward the pathway. John stood there, his rifle held at the ready, watching as a striker dragged the body of a VC from the jungle by the feet. The top of the dead man’s head was missing and he was leaving a slimy trail of blood and brains behind him.
